THE YOUTH HOSTEL
The ancient Convent of San Girolamo
The Youth Hostel of Volterra, which is a renovation of an ancient Franciscan Convent of the XV century, is found at the entrance of the city.
Apart from the nature of its structure, which is ideal for relaxation and study, the Hostel is also situated in an optimum position
from where one can easily connect to the major historical and artistic centers of Tuscany: one hour to Pisa, Florence, Siena and only 30 minutes to the seaside and San Gimignano.
Without any architectural barriers, the Hostel is characterized in a particolar model, due to its wonderful internal Cloister,
based on the designs of Michelazzo (sculptor and architect of Donatello workshop).
THE HISTORY OF THE CHURCH AND ITS CONVENT
Inside the Church of San Girolamo of the XV century and in its chapels on the side of the Portico, there are considerable works, among which the terracotta
of Giovanni Della Robbia, on which one can read Questa tavola a fatto fare Michelangelo di Niccolajo Ceregli. MCCCCC..
There exists also another beautiful plate of Robbia and the welcoming Annunciation of Benvenuto Di Giovanni in the adjacent Convent.
The two statues of terracotta, on the side of the major altar, are among the few surviving works of Cecco da Gambassi.
Among the paitings, there is one of Domenico Ghirlandajo, one of Santi di Tito and a third one on which it is written: Opus Benvenuti Joannis de Senis. MCCCCLVI.
The Church, in the same way as the Convent, was structured between 1445 and 1465 by the Council of Volterra that assigned it to the Franciscan Monks.
The construction of San Girolamo's Covent began in 1445 on the design of Michelozzo.
San Girolamo's parish has about 481 parishioners ot of the wall.
